Some stories are etched into history’s memory. Others quietly unfold despite it. The Thing With Feathers, an original Aadyam Theatre production, is one such story. Written and directed by Rajat Kapoor, and co-written by Rabia Kapoor and Chandrachoor Rai, the play is a deeply human work set against one of the most turbulent times of the 20th century. It is not about wars, revolutions, or the world they shaped. It is a tale of people who lived through it, those who continued to fall in love, built a family, grieved losses, imagined a future, and began again.
Spanning the decades between 1900 and 1950, the play follows ordinary lives navigating extraordinary times. As the world around them shifts in unexpected ways, they are forced to confront loss and separation while holding onto hope and the possibility of starting over. Rather than looking at the events through a historical lens, the play turns its gaze towards the intimate moments that often go unnoticed, asking a question that remains relevant even today: when everything around us changes, what is it that really keeps the human spirit alive?
The play moves across continents, unfolding through lives that unexpectedly cross paths, revealing how love, chance, and resilience continue to shape in the shadow of conflict. Acting as narrators, there are birds who are silent witnesses to both history’s grand sweep and the countless lives it never recorded.
Speaking about the play, Rajat Kapoor, writer and director of The Thing With Feathers, said, “We started with the idea of a play based on the first half of the 20th century. We tried to find our way through the maze of possibilities in the rehearsal space with the actors and at the idea desk with the writers. A thought emerged that perhaps the story of these fifty momentous years would have an immediacy if we saw it through the lens of common folks. The play could have been many things, could have taken a thousand different forms, but eventually it became the thing that it wanted to become.”
