Smita Thackeray, the renowned social activist and founder of Mukkti Foundation, orchestrated a grand musical event on the 23rd of January 2024 in Mumbai, commemorating the 98th birth anniversary of the legendary Shiv Sena supremo, Balasaheb Thackeray.
Present on this occasion were Jeetendra, Govinda, Sonu Nigam, Dheeraj Kumar, Uday Samant, Ranjeet, Armaan Tahil, Rohansh Pandit, Avi, Sri Sri Tulsi ji Maharaj, Kripashankar Singh, Kunika Sadanand, Ayaan Lall among others.
Smita Thackeray, through Mukkti Foundation, continues her dedicated commitment to cultural heritage and social causes.
The evening, thoughtfully curated by Bina Aziz, unfolded as a powerful homage to the Tiger of Marathi Resurgence. Attendees experienced a moving tribute to Balasaheb Thackeray, a man deeply fond of music and closely connected to the film industry. The musical concert featured performances by renowned artists, including Talat Aziz, Jaspinder Narula, Harshdeep Kaur, Sanjeevni Bhelande, Shreyas Puranik, Amrita Chatterjee, and Sneha Astunkar, Nandesh Upam
The maestro Roop Kumar Rathod recorded a special song for the occasion, adding a unique touch to the celebration which is written by Israr Ansari.
The event was elevated by the mesmerizing tunes of Nitin Shankar’s Orchestra, bringing a symphonic touch to the evening and enhancing the emotional depth of the performances.
Known for his deep appreciation of melodies and cultural expressions, Balasaheb’s affection for music was a cherished aspect of his persona. The initiative aimed to capture the essence of Balasaheb’s connection with music, offering a heartfelt homage to the late leader’s multifaceted personality. Through this initiative, Smita Thackeray seeks to celebrate the enduring impact of Balasaheb’s life and the role music played in shaping his cultural and political journey.

Talat Aziz says ”I am a veteran and have had a career spanning 43 years . Music lovers all over the world know me and my musical works from the classic films like Umrao Jaan Bazaar and Daddy to name a few . But no one knows that Balasaheb loved my ghazal ‘ kaise sukun paaoon ‘ and once in the Mayor’s Bungalow in 1991 he asked me to sing this ghazal and remembered the verses . So today as a tribute I am going to start my performance with the same ghazal”
Harshdeep Kaur says ”Bal Saheb ji will be remembered as a Courageous and indomitable leader, he never hesitated from raising issues of public welfare. He always remained proud of Indian ethos and values. He continues to inspire millions even today. And it’s an honour for me to sing on his 98th birth anniversary and a tribute to him through my music”
