Sydney Sweeney sheds her good-girl persona in ‘Immaculate,’ a horror film where her character Cecilia, a devout young nun, is thrust into the nightmarish underbelly of a secluded Italian convent. While the premise is undeniably creepy, I found ‘Immaculate’ to be quite different from what I expected. While many horror movies featuring nuns often focus on demonic possession or other demonic themes, ‘Immaculate’ takes a different direction.
Upon her arrival at the convent, Cecilia’s initial warm reception swiftly accelerates into a chilling nightmare as she uncovers sinister secrets and confronts unspeakable horrors within her new home. It may not reach the intense scare level of the Conjuring franchise, but it’s quite unsettling. The film’s suspense intensifies, revealing cracks in Cecilia’s faith as she confronts the inexplicable. Strange events and cryptic rituals hint at a darker reality, leading to Sister Cecilia’s sudden pregnancy, which accelerates the narrative with gripping intensity. The plot’s rapid twists and turns which adds an intriguing dimension to the unfolding mystery.
I won’t spoil it further with my review, so you’ll have to see it for yourself. All I can say is that it concludes with a significant mystery that’s both eerie and disturbing.
