Saiyami Kher as Anina
R’ Balki’s Ghoomer left us spinning with emotions with the outstanding performance by Saiyami Kher and Abhishek Bachchan.
The film revolves around the journey of Anina (Saiyami Kher), an aspiring cricketer focused on playing for her country. Her dedication pays off when she is selected to play in the Indian women’s cricket team for a tour to England. Just before her dream debut match, she loses her right arm in a freak accident. What follows is a story of vulnerability, perseverance, and the will to overcome any setbacks. To add to the twist in this tale, enter Paddy (Abhishek Bachchan), a former cricketer turned alcoholic and a recluse and who takes it upon himself to mentor Anina through this phase. Paddy challenges Anina not to give up on her dreams and work towards once again playing for India. Switching from being a batswoman, Anina turns into a left-hand bowler read as Ghoomer and how?!
R Balki storytelling enunciates how the power of perseverance coupled with family support can see one through the upheavals of life. Together the mentor-disciple fight it out against all odds, breakdowns, edging through the physical endurances to once again get an opportunity to play in an international match against England. Here the word ‘Ghoomer’ coined by a commentator (Amitabh Bachchan) becomes a rant as the stadium dances with merriment at each spinning ball. Finally winning the hearts of the spectators and the audience, this heart-wrenching story leaves us with some happy tears.
Some scenes which leave a lasting impression in our minds has Abhishek’s poignant scenes as much as his quick-witted retorts and a few laughs. This is by far one of Abhishek’s best performance, with multiple shades of emotions, and we are loving him more.
Simple and well written screenplay impresses as much as it expresses.
