~ Mumbai’s monsoons couldn’t stop a mother-son duo from catching Pixar’s superhero sequel that packs in laughs, love, and lots of Jack-Jack!
When Incredibles 2 hit theatres in Mumbai on Friday, July 6, 2018, the city was caught in the throes of a relentless monsoon spell. With streets flooding and grey skies looming, most residents chose to stay indoors, weathering the storm with worry and tea. But by Tuesday, my 9-year-old son Jeehan and I decided to brave the rains and indulge in a classic Mumbai pastime — watching a movie at the theatre.
After much pestering (Jeehan had been after me for days), we headed to our favorite spot — Cinépolis Fun Cinemas in Andheri West. It’s known for its convenient location, value-for-money ticket prices, and pocket-friendly food combos, not to mention the comfy seating and top-notch infrastructure. Nestled in a vibrant area with buzzing cafés and pubs, it’s a go-to spot even on the rainiest of days.
When we arrived at the box office, we weren’t the only ones with the idea — seats were filling fast. Clearly, animated movies still pull crowds of all ages, and Incredibles 2 is no exception. It picks up right where the original left off, with the Parr family attempting to stop The Underminer — a mission that doesn’t exactly go smoothly. The film quickly reestablishes a key plot point: being a Super is still illegal.
Enter new characters: the tech-savvy siblings Winston and Evelyn Deavor, voiced by Bob Odenkirk and Catherine Keener. They’re determined to restore public trust in Supers and recruit Elastigirl (Helen Parr) — voiced once again by the brilliant Holly Hunter — as the new face of superhero justice. This role reversal leaves Mr. Incredible (Bob Parr) at home, grappling with parenting chaos — from Violet’s teenage angst and boy troubles, Dash’s homework meltdowns (hello, “new math”), and the unpredictable powers of baby Jack-Jack.
The real treat, however, is seeing Jack-Jack in action — his shape-shifting, dimension-hopping, laser-eyed antics had Jeehan in stitches. We both laughed our hearts out, especially during scenes with the ever-iconic Edna Mode, who returns to lend her genius to babysitting duties.
Meanwhile, Elastigirl’s mission to stop the villainous Screenslaver adds a layer of mystery and action, culminating in a larger team of Supers stepping out of the shadows — a hopeful nod to unity, justice, and doing the right thing.
For fans of the original, Incredibles 2 offers even more of everything — more Supers, more powers, more Frozone, and definitely more heart. The vibrant animation, witty storytelling, and emotional undertones make it a film that’s not just for kids, but for the whole family.
And Mumbai certainly showed its love. Despite the downpour, theatres saw a strong turnout. The Hindi dubbed version continues a fun tradition — with Incredibles (2004) featuring Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, and this installment too boasting top-tier voice talent from Bollywood.
Verdict?
This sequel doesn’t just live up to the original — it might even outshine it. If you’re looking for a feel-good family film with action, laughs, and heartwarming moments, Incredibles 2 is an absolute must-watch.
