A Mother’s love for her child is unquestionable and when it comes to saving life her child’s life she will leave no stone unturned and take any risk that comes its way. Recently, Junaid (name changed), a 45-years old man from Uttar Pradesh, suffering from Polycystic Kidney disease, got the gift of life from his 70-years old Fatima (name changed) at Nanavati Super Speciality Hospital in Mumbai.
Junaid was suffering from an enlarged kidney which was 24cm; the normal size of the kidney is usually between 9-10 cm. This had left no space to perform and surgeries. After much deliberation and the complications increasing every day, the surgeons had to surgically remove both the kidneys. Junaid was in pain and his health was deteriorating every day. The only way to save his life was a kidney transplant. Looking at her son’s condition, Fatima decided to take the brave decision of donating her kidney for the transplant. The necessary tests were done to ensure that the mother is stable to donate the kidney knowing her age. After all the reports were normal, the surgery was performed and was successful.
“Polycystic Kidney disease – is an inherited disorder in which clusters of cysts develop in the kidneys. These cysts cause the kidney to swell up. Junaid’s creatinine level had reached 9. Only a kidney transplant could save his life. When Junaid’s mother came forward as a donor, we were apprehensive initially considering the age of the donor. But her willpower to give her son a new lease of life was great,” said Dr. Anup Chaudhari, Consultant Nephrologist at Nanavati Super Speciality Hospital.
After a successful surgery, both the mother and son are doing good. With the help of regular checkup and therapy, they are on the path of living a better life together.
The case manifests not only the emotional bond between a mother and her son but also the importance of organ donation in saving lives and age need not be a barrier.
India witnesses less than 5,000 kidney transplants are carried out annually against an estimated requirement of over 1,75,000. Organ donation is the single most important factor to save the life of needy patients.
According to Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, deceased organ donation rate in India is approximately 0.58 per million populations. We must all come forward and ensure that we reduce this demand and supply ration. Educating your family and friends about the importance of organ donation is important.
